Hi, I'm new here (obviously) and the real reason I came was for critiques. Oh, well, also for my stories to be proofread. Basically, I had this writing prompt from my English teacher and we needed to create a horror story. (We needed to incorporate some horror elements from Edgar Allan Poe) I did, and I love my plot but I'm not sure if my diction is well developed. I plan on showing my best friend this piece and I want to make sure it can be the best it can be! (She's an amazing writer. Her essays landed her a scholarship.) It's a short, melodramatic story with a twist. I honestly need to know how I can improve, so please feel free to tell me. Thank you so much!

Resources for Fiction Writers

Hello! I'd like to let you all know about start_writing, a resource community for fiction writers.

The community was originally created for the students of The Open University's 'Start Writing Fiction' Course (A174), however, membership is now open to anyone, although you don't have to be a member to post your resources and recommendations.

To find resources please visit the tags page. Each resource is listed under its most appropriate tags. The general writing sites tag leads to sites that contain information on many aspects of writing. You might want to look in detail at these sites to find additional information.

Feel free to share any links you might have stashed away in your bookmarks. The more the merrier!

We also have a sister site, start_writing_2, for challenges, prompts and critique.

Thank you for your time. :)

Hey guys! My name’s Diana, and I’m also a member of Gather.com. I wanted to let you know about this awesome competition in which the prize is a publishing contract! Have any of you ever written a novel-length manuscript in the romance genre? If so, you might want to check this out.

The competition works sort of like American Idol. You have until August 22 to send in your full-length manuscript, and to post the first chapter in the group First Chapters Romance Writing Competition. After August 27, other users on Gather will vote on the chapters they like best. 25 authors will move onto round two, and further voting will narrow it down to the cream of the crop.

Five finalists will have the chance to win a guaranteed publishing contract, along with a $5000 cash advance! You can go to First Chapters Romance Writing Competition for more info.  This sounds like an awesome opportunity; I wish I had a finished manuscript of my own! For all of you who do, I just wanted to bring this to your attention.
